What We Do
The African Centre for a Green Economy (AfriCGE) is an Africa-based think-tank and implementation partner advancing inclusive, locally grounded green and just transitions. We work at the intersection of policy, finance, enterprise development, skills, and community action, supporting governments, institutions, and practitioners to move from ambition to delivery.
Our work is structured around five mutually reinforcing pillars, delivered through flagship platforms and initiatives operating across Southern, Eastern, and parts of West Africa.
How We Work
Across all pillars, AfriCGE:
Combines research, practice, and convening
Partners with governments, academia, civil society, and the private sector
Prioritises African-led solutions, local institutions, and long-term capacity
Focuses on implementation, not just strategy
Our Focus
We work across key transition domains, including:
Just Energy Transition
Green Jobs and Skills
Climate Finance and Investment
Green Industrialisation and Local Value Chains
Food Systems, Land Use, and Nature-based Solutions
Just Transition Research, Policy & Systems Change
We generate applied research, policy analysis, and strategic insights that inform national and sub-national just transition pathways, with a strong focus on implementation realities.
Our work supports:
Just Energy Transition planning and delivery
Green industrialisation and local value chains
Climate and development policy coherence
Evidence-based decision-making for governments and development partners
This pillar is anchored through initiatives such as the Just Transition Lab (JTL) and multi-country research partnerships with universities, think-tanks, and public institutions.
Green Enterprise & Innovation Support
We support early-stage and growth-stage green enterprises to become investment-ready and impact-driven, particularly those operating in underserved markets.
Our support includes:
Enterprise incubation and acceleration
Business model and market development
ESG and impact integration
Linking entrepreneurs to financiers, corporates, and public programmes
This work is delivered through platforms such as the Just Transition Innovation Platform (J-TIP) and targeted enterprise development programmes linked to energy, agriculture, waste, and circular economy value chains.
Skills, Leadership & Knowledge Platforms
We build the human and institutional capacity required to deliver Africa’s green transition.
Through the AfriCGE Academy and associated knowledge platforms, we provide:
Executive and practitioner training on green economy, climate finance, and just transitions
Short courses and masterclasses for professionals, entrepreneurs, and policymakers
Thought leadership, publications, and convenings
Flagship convenings such as the Africa Green Jobs Forum (AGJF) create continental spaces for dialogue, learning, and action on inclusive green employment and skills development.

Shaping Inclusive Transitions (SIT)
Shaping Inclusive Transitions (SIT) is AfriCGE’s flagship community-centred platform for grounding just transition debates in lived realities.
Through SIT, we:
Convene community dialogues in coal-transitioning and climate-vulnerable regions
Elevate grassroots voices, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, women, and youth
Connect local priorities with national policy and investment discussions
Translate community insights into policy briefs, dialogue outcomes, and action pathways
SIT ensures that Africa’s green transition is socially anchored, politically legitimate, and locally owned.
Landscape Resilience
Our work specifically supports governments, business, and civil society across Africa to develop strategies to achieve their sustainable development objectives. Our service consists of value chain innovation, skills development, and data intelligence.
